Street Smarts (Girl Guide Badge) by $ophia

This term Eleanor and I started taking the sky train to school.
We decided this would be a great opportunity for me to earn my street wise girl guide badge!
This is us embarking on our first quest on transit.

For my girl guide badge requirements I have to:
  1. draw a map of my route to school
  2. be able to read a street map and give directions
  3. brainstorm the top 10 safety tips every kid should know
  4. design a colouring book for kids about safety
  5. brainstorm ways to increase my own personal safety
  6. create a puppet show for kids about safety.
It's still a work in progress but I'm working on it.
So far I've done numbers 1, 2, & 5. I'm half way through 3 too.

Until next time I'm $ophia Pallister, signing off.

GOOD NIGHT!!!!

Super-Awesome Science with Eleanor Pallister!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First of all, speaking of earth science, here is a little bit of art my family did where we painted rocks!

I have a learned a lot about plants this term. I am super, super, super, excited. I think you will be too when you hear I coloured celery! Colouring the celery taught me about water in plants veins.

This is me, my friend Miranda and Sophia collecting leaf specimens. We noticed that the leaves could be ver small and point or very big and round.

This is us THROWING leaf specimens!

This is when we were looking at seeds and how seeds travel in little tiny helicopters. (Not real helicopters. They are shaped with sort of a helicopter propellor on them, and spin.) Trees have lots of different ways to spread their seeds and some are with helicopters!

This is a tree which some really odd sap was coming out of, if you look closely you can see on a diagonal slant off my shoulder, you can see sort of a whitish purple blomp of sap. It came out of the tree but but didnt ever drip down far enough so a solid crust formed around it and when you touched it would sort of dent in.

This is a tree which has been uprooted. This was not the only tree which we saw uprooted in our neighbourhood, there were about 3-5 trees we saw like his after the wind storm. The reason why all these trees which which are very supportive was that in the past when we had wind storms, there usually weren't droughts before that. But this summer there was a drought right before the windstorm so all of the roots were dry, and not strong. So that's why when the windstorm came tree branches and trees fell over like crazy. This part where my foot is, is a massive, massive, massive tree root where it just snapped!

This is a nursing tree which I found on a hike I went on.  (Not like milk-nursing, it is called a nursing tree because it gave up it's stump/roots and is giving its nutrients to make a new tree.) So this old tree died and new trees seeds got blown on to it, and the weather made it become a new tree.

This is me with my brownie troop going tree planting! It was so mega-fun! I hung out with all of my friends. The trees were little babies and they were in little pots. There were 3 simple steps to planting the trees. Step 1: take the plant out of the pot. Step 2: take your tree and place it in the hole. Step 3: re-bury the tree, but make sure it is not up to the stem or it will rot and grow moldy and snap and die! We had mega-awesome fun and I even saw a salmon go up stream to lay its eggs. We watched it go upstream 6 times and on the last time it made it! And I got a tree planting t-shirt.

This term I have made a amazing car/rocketship/hippopotamus! In this picture I would like to show you how I used screws and hinges to make a door. In the pictures above you can see the wings of the rocket ship we attached them by gluing and taping them on. We also put on wheels but a few of them are falling off. We haven't finished painting it yet.

The steering wheel was made from a old CD and a toilet paper tube. The gear shift lever is made of a styrofoam ball, and old box and a whole lot of tape! If you can look above the steering wheel, that is the windshield window. We used blue cellophane, and taped it on. it was mega-fun and amazing to do it.

This is the control panel. it shows so many amazing buttons and things, or if you're low on gas, or honk your horn, or a windshield wiper, though the windshield wiper we made broke.

They are some birds which I saw outside my front window, they were flying from lawn to lawn to lawn. it was like they all had the same mind! They flew all at the same time from lawn to lawn and up on to telephone lines, to lines. it was a amazing how they did it.

Oh, excuse me! That's not supposed to be on here! Next slide!!!!

Awesome, Terrific Exercise/Fun! By Eleanor (for Sophia too.)

Hello, people of the universe, this is me again, Eleanor/Bubbles.  I (and Sophia) have been doing P.E. over this term.

This is us bowling with our little brother.

This is Sophia and I with some of our friends swimming in Osoyoos in the beginning of September. We were still cutting off the summer!

This is us when we were walking to the Superhero Terry Fox Run. I am Lady Marshmallow. I created that character. She is the sidekick of  Super Unicorn Girl, Sophia's character.

This is us at the Superhero Terry Fox Run. If you can see me you are lucky, because I am tiny. I am next to Capt. America.  Our cousin, Mason, who is dressed as Starlord (in the long coat beside my sister) talked at Terry Fox day because he had cancer and he almost died of it, but cancer research got better and better over the years and that is why he is still alive today because it saved him, so he talked about that at terry Fox day. He is a cosplayer and he these are all of his friends dressed up as Superheroes!!!!!!!!

This is me taking a bike ride with my sister Sophia.

This is us doing exercises on a giant rock. We like making up our own exercises at playgrounds and other places.

This is us on a hike on the Trans-Canada trail.

This is me at a super-awesome playground, freezing cold, doing a super awesome spinny thing.

The other fun thing we do for exercise is to dance to music or play an exercise game on our Wii video system.  Well, well, students, that would be today's lesson! Remember to finish your homework by tomorrow evening! I'm watching you!

Smile Girl Badge (Brownies) and Health and Career by Eleanor

Hello people of the galaxy! You are now in the presence of the awesome Eleanor/ Bubbles!

I have come to give you many awesome yum-yums of health, awesomeness and learning. So listen carefully!

Now, I shall start. In the past few months I have been working on Brownie Badges. I am having a splendiferous time doing it. I have been working on my "Smile Girl" badge. At brownies what I had to do was make a collage of people smiling, smiling, smiling and smiling M&MS! We also had to talk about good dental habits and healthy things that we could do and we had to make a chart which we had to do for as long as we needed to - well, not until I was 12, but anyway, we needed to do it to show all the things that are good for our body, like washing our hands before eating, bathing every once in a while, or cleaning our bodies and good work habits like do chores around the house, do homework, water plants, eat pancakes, kidding about the pancakes.

I set a goal that I wanted to finish the chart, and it took me about two and half eons/weeks. I needed people to help me sometimes with reaching high places while dusting, or reminding me to wash my hands before I ate, or I needed my family chart to tell me if it was my bath night. It's a good idea to learn these habits so I can be healthier and cleaner and that it can be a habit of yours to do these things every day, to be healthy, strong and keep the doc away... actually you may want the doctor to come to make sure you ARE healthy, so don't keep the doctor away!

Speaking of doctors, I had to interview my dentist and I had to come up with my own questions. I asked her: what are good dental habits, how long should you brush your teeth for, and should you brush your teeth every day and night? She said you should floss your teeth every time you brush and brush your teeth every night and day (q 1&3) and should should brush your teeth for 2 whole minutes and most people only brush their teeth for 15-20 seconds! Isn't that crazy, man?(q2)

The other things I have worked on this term is I have been learning to take the Skytrain with my sister home from school by ourselves. For safety we have an emergency phone which we call our Mum on and we have a list of safe people on our phone. We have 911 and the kids help hotline which is 310-1234. That is the kids help hotline phone number. That number is for kids to call if they are in danger, or if there is something wrong for you or for another kid you know, that's the number you call. And what kids should know is you should always tell a safe grownup because its not their fault they're getting hurt.

We talked about safety tips, like:

  • having safe people to talk to at the stations, safe places to stop and ask for help (librarian, Tony a security guard, Mc Donalds if I got sick - a McD's worker, a parent with young ids, cause they know kids stuff)
  • not to go anywhere with strangers
  • trusting your own gut, like if a person gives an "uh-oh" feeling, get away
  • if anybody tries to do something you don't like or grab you, say "NOOOOOO" "stop! I don't like this! I don't know you!!!!"
  • never try to make online friends with people and reveal your identity to someone you don't know in online, in public or anywhere
  • do not give your identity where you live live or anything about you to people you don't know
  • let's say if I'm supposed to meet my Mum at the station, I'm not allowed to go off to the soda fountain with all the money I have, I'm not allowed to go off and stay there forever because that would be wrong - what I'm trying to say is if you make a plan with a safe grownup, stick to the plan and never go off it! Unless they know about it. And if something goes wrong, call the grown-up and let them know.
  • do not touch things that you do not know what they are, and do not touch garbage, needles or, condoms (which are dirty penis balloons) or homeless people, or aliens, or poison dart frogs.

I have learned a lot about being healthy and safe, so thanks for listening to this TED talk. peace, man! peace out!

Pioneers, trains, wars, masks, e-books and more!

We love our H.L.G.C. Home Learners Girls Congregation!

One day we made up a "pioneer girls" game. We grew our own food, carried our own water and made our own "campfire".

We made our own face and hair masks out of natural ingredients!

We visited the World War I battle exhibit at the Port Moody Museum and learned about our our great-grandfather fought in the war and was saved by a bible (or a prayer book) in his pocket!

We visited the railway museum and learned about the first trains that came to Vancouver.

We kept cooking and planing healthy meals for our family.

We made chicks and narwhals out of marzipan for Shakespeare's birthday.

Eleanor has been learning about air, water and soil, learning to plant her own plants and start her own garden.

Eleanor has been learning about toxins in detergents, and how they affect the water systems in our province. We compared laundry soaps and chose one that wasn't poison!

We did some math to learn about comparison shopping, and how to compare prices based on weights and measures (cost per 100g).

And of course, Eleanor wrote an e-book called "Tips On How To Bend A Bully." She learned how to use the e-book software, cut and paste and publish her own entries.

And.... here's some photos for the end of the year slide show!
