Girl Guide Badge: Farming by Sophia

Farming:

Help in some form of land work such as harvesting, potato picking, fruit, etc.

When I was at my farm field trip I helped to pick lemon cucumbers.

Identify two breeds of cattle, pigs or sheep in your area.

If you google horses for sale in this area, some of them are Iberian warmbloods, Peruvian Palamino, and Andalusian.

Identify 2 kinds of crops grown in your area.

2 crops in this area are pumpkins, lemon cucumbers and asst'd peppers.

Describe how farm products in your area are marketed.

I visited our local produce market and interviewed a man there.

He said there are 4 main ways of marketing farm products:
1) Roadside stands & farmers' markets
2) Community bulletins
3) Calling markets directly and asking if they can sell your product
4) Putting up ads online

Describe three types of farming in Canada.

Grain and seed farming, with crops like oats, barley, alfalfa and wheat.
Fruit farming, with crops like apples, pears, cherries, plums and apricots
Other things that are harvested in Canada are hazelnuts, maple sap for syrup, maple butter and maple sugar

Create a song or story (or poem) of life on a farm.

Farm Haiku

We wake up at dawn
We work at the ground 'til noon
Sprouts will appear soon

Books We Loved This Term by Sophia and Eleanor

Some of my favourite books have been: "In A Blink" by Kiki Thorpe. it is chapter book that I was able to read all by myself, and it is about fairies, fairies, fairies! and girls go come to Neverland by accident and I really like this author because she is so cool.

I read another Junie B book Called "Boo...And I mean it!" It wasn't really my favourite, it was just an "ish - ish"  kind of book.

I have read a lot of National Geographic "Weird But True" and "Amazing Facts" books. By Eleanor.

We listened to the audio books of  "The Mouse and The Motorcylce,", "Runaway Ralph", and "Ralph S. Mouse" and "Ribsy" all by Beverly Cleary.
"I like Ralph because he is adventurous, cool and has a mind of his own." -Eleanor
"I find it very creative how Beverly Cleary associates Ralph's feelings to what an actual mouse would do if it were put in those situations."- Sophia

We listened to "Little House in the Big Woods" By Laura Ingalls Wilder and We did "The Shore of Silver Lake" by her too as a read-aloud.

"I like how adventurous and outgoing Laura Ingalls and fascinating she is. I learn a lot about early American history from it. I liked hearing the stories of laura's grandpa and her dad and her cousins too." - Eleanor
"I enjoyed how it gives you a sneak peek into pioneer life and I like to think of how all these adventurous stories of people hunting bears and getting chased down by panthers and making cheese and butter and maple sugar home-made and stories of wonderful dances and the cosy woods are all true." - Sophia
Sophia: The books I've read this term are "A Whole Nother Story", "Another Whole Nother Story", and "No Other Story" by DR. Cuthbert Soup, whose actual identity is the guy who wrote "Ice Age The Final Meltdown." I would highly suggest these books because  they are chock-full of adventure, romance, a desperate race through time and space, and unsolicited advice.

I've also read "Minion" by John David Anderson about a boy who is learning to become a villain, which is a companion book to "Sidekicked" which I read last term and is about a boy who is training to become a super hero's side kick and eventually a super-hero himself.

I've also read a book called "Braids, Buns and Twists! A Manual to 82 Fabulous Hairstyles" because I am planning to become a hairstylist and a bank accountant and maybe even a novelist when I grow up.

Nature Walks and Forces and Motion!!! by $ophia

This term we have been going on nature walks, usually around our neighbourhood, and once we did one on Burnaby Mountain.

Trying to make fall!

When we were on Burnaby Mountain, we explored the frost and how we affect it when we do different things.

When we went to the swings we learned about air resistance, one of the forces of nature.

I made this cute little "Sophie Da Vinci" video you can see above about air resistance and how I could feel it pushing down on me when I was one the swings.

When we go on our walks, sometimes we see something very interesting... ANIMAL PRINTS!

Spotting racoon tracks

Like racoon prints, dog prints, deer prints, cat prints, and one time a BALLERINA-A-SAURUS! Actually it was just me and Eleanor doing twirls in the wet gravel in Pax's soccer field. But we imagined it was dinosaur that liked to do ballet and we created a whole story about a ballerina-a-saurus trying to destroy a McDonald's.

The tracks of a ballerina-a-saurus
Reading about the Japanese Aboriginal Totem Poles on Burnaby Mountain - yay Social Studies!!!!

Actual dog tracks

Also when we were on Burnaby Mountain we looked at the fog and also some of the weather patterns that have been going on. Eleanor was noticing for Grade 2 science the water and air and earth stuff.

On a nature walk at Rocky Point Park in Port Moody, we spied a jelly fish!

We were exploring the wonder of magnets. This shows Eleanor using a magnet to pick up iron filings, and me and Eleanor crazily pointing at a home-made compass we made with a magnetized sewing

needle.
